Frequently asked questions

Answers about the Babysense breathing monitor – use, safety, mattress, batteries and the rental system.

About breathing monitors:
What mattress thickness is recommended when using a breathing monitor?

A standard baby mattress up to 15 cm.

Warning: when using a breathing monitor, an overly thick or soft bamboo mattress may prevent movements from being detected correctly.

Which batteries may be used in the breathing monitor?

Non-rechargeable alkaline AA batteries

Can I use a bassinet with the breathing monitor?

No. The breathing monitor should be used in a static, freestanding crib.

Can I have two children in one crib?

Do not put another child or a pet in the crib. Babysense cannot be used for two children in one crib.

How does Babysense work in principle?

Babysense continuously monitors breathing and respiratory movements and triggers an audible and visual alarm if movements stop for 20 seconds or if the breathing rate falls below 10 breaths per minute.

How does borrowing a breathing monitor work? What do I need?

Nadácia Križovatka lends Babysense breathing monitors as part of the “Mummy, I’m breathing” project across Slovakia, in cooperation with partner hospitals and selected pharmacies in the Dr.Max Pharmacy network. We also lend Babysense breathing monitors for home use. You can find the list of hospitals and pharmacies in the project on our website: nadaciakrizovatka.sk/vypozicne-miesta.

You do not need to order a breathing monitor in advance. If you give birth at one of the cooperating hospitals, you can borrow a monitor before leaving the hospital. If you borrow through a pharmacy, a phone reservation before your planned pickup is enough.

To borrow a monitor you need a valid ID card and proof that the contribution fee has been paid. The fee can be paid directly at the rental location.

How does BABYSENSE work?

Babysense sensor pads register your baby’s body movements, and the control unit’s microprocessor algorithm is designed to recognise the rhythm / ratio of these movements!

Babysense is not just another movement monitor, because it has parameters that define breathing activity that is too slow (under 10 micro-movements per minute), too fast (more than 90 micro-movements per minute), or no movement for 20 seconds.
